Self-care is a prerequisite to caring for others

The work of a licensed clinical mental health counselor can be emotionally taxing. Our own self-care limits our ability to care for others. I have been doing the work of a LCMHC for 25+ years, the last 15 in private practice. I typically see between 30 and 40 clients each week. In order to do this well, I learned that I must first care for myself well. I strive to sleep well nightly, eat nutritiously & mindfully at meal times. I manage my stress by taking breaks between sessions,  exercising and staying connected daily. Before ending each workday I strive to exercise, pray/meditate, practice gratitude and relax before transitioning to home. By caring for ourselves well, we are better able to care for others well.
